Arkansas Military Dependent Scholarship — Who Qualifies?

You’re a military dependent in Arkansas — spouse or child of a veteran — and someone mentioned there’s a scholarship that could cover your college. The Arkansas Military Dependent Scholarship exists, but the eligibility rules are specific and the benefit amount varies depending on your situation. Here’s who actually qualifies and what the scholarship pays.

Who Qualifies for the Scholarship

The Arkansas Military Dependents’ Scholarship is available to spouses and children of Arkansas veterans who meet specific service-connected criteria. This is not a general military family scholarship — the veteran must fall into one of these categories:

Killed in action or died as a result of service-connected causes. The veteran’s death must be officially recognized as service-connected by the VA or the Department of Defense.

Missing in action or prisoner of war. Dependents of service members listed as MIA or POW qualify for the duration of that status.

100% total and permanently disabled due to service. The veteran must have a 100% disability rating that’s classified as total and permanent by the VA. A 100% schedular rating that isn’t designated as permanent may not qualify — check with the Arkansas Department of Veterans Affairs for your specific situation.

The dependent must also be an Arkansas resident and attend an Arkansas state-funded institution of higher education. Private universities are not covered.

What the Scholarship Pays

The scholarship covers tuition, fees, room, and board at Arkansas public colleges and universities. That’s a broader benefit than many state veteran dependent programs, which often cover only tuition. The inclusion of room and board makes this one of the more valuable state-level military dependent scholarships in the country.

The scholarship covers up to eight semesters of undergraduate study (essentially a four-year degree). It does not cover graduate school. Benefits are paid directly to the institution, not to the student.

One important limitation: the scholarship covers amounts not already paid by other scholarships or grants. If you receive federal Pell Grants or other financial aid, the Arkansas scholarship fills the gap rather than stacking on top. It’s designed to ensure you pay nothing out of pocket, not to generate excess refund money.

How to Apply

Applications go through the Arkansas Department of Higher Education (ADHE). You’ll need:

Proof of the veteran’s qualifying status — a VA disability letter showing 100% permanent and total rating, a DD-214, or official MIA/POW/KIA documentation. Proof of dependent relationship — birth certificate, marriage certificate, or legal adoption records. Proof of Arkansas residency. Enrollment at an Arkansas public institution.

Contact the ADHE financial aid division or your school’s veterans services office to start the process. Processing times vary by school and by the completeness of your documentation. Start early — at least two to three months before your first semester.

If you’re eligible, this scholarship essentially makes college free at any Arkansas public university. Tuition, fees, room, and board — all covered for up to four years. The eligibility criteria are narrow, but for the families who qualify, it’s one of the strongest state-level benefits available to military dependents anywhere in the country.
