New York Yellow Ribbon Schools: 2026–27 Guide

New York Yellow Ribbon participation must be checked by institution, academic division, degree level, and academic year. Columbia, Cornell, and NYU publish veteran-benefit resources, but their terms are not interchangeable across undergraduate, graduate, law, business, arts, and professional programs. Use VA’s live finder for the exact program before relying on a university name.

New York schools to investigate

These verified examples are not a complete list or ranking. VA’s directory is the authoritative current inventory.

Columbia University

Columbia participation is school-specific. The School of General Studies says it participates and publishes dedicated veteran financial-aid information. Other Columbia divisions—including Business, Arts, and SIPA—publish their own Yellow Ribbon terms, applications, amounts, or recipient limits.

Do not apply one Columbia school’s promise to another. Columbia Business School currently publishes a specific annual contribution, while SIPA warns that amounts can change and funding is not guaranteed to every eligible student. Cornell University

Cornell states that it participates in the Post-9/11 GI Bill and Yellow Ribbon programs and maintains a university military community and Veterans House. That confirms institutional support, but the current VA agreement still controls the contribution, participant limit, and eligible degree level. Review Cornell’s military-community information, then verify the exact program with VA and Cornell’s certifying official.

New York University

NYU publishes Yellow Ribbon participation across several schools, but contributions differ. NYU School of Professional Studies, Stern, Law, and other divisions publish separate terms. NYU’s general guidance also explains that other benefits can affect the final award.

For example, NYU SPS publishes a program-specific 2026–27 contribution, while NYU Law describes a different arrangement for eligible law students. Never transfer an amount from SPS, Stern, or Law to another NYU program. Use NYU’s military-affiliated student information as a starting point.

New York’s Veterans Tuition Award is separate

New York State also administers a Veterans Tuition Award through HESC. The state describes it as support for eligible veterans studying full- or part-time in approved undergraduate, graduate, or vocational programs in New York. Eligibility, residency, service, discharge, award, and application rules are separate from federal Yellow Ribbon.

A student may need to coordinate state aid, institutional aid, and VA benefits. Do not simply add every advertised maximum. Ask the school financial-aid office how tuition-specific assistance is applied to the net tuition and fees certified to VA. Review the New York State veteran education awards.

Who can receive Yellow Ribbon?

VA generally requires Post-9/11 GI Bill eligibility at the 100% level. Qualifying paths can include sufficient active-duty service, an eligible service-connected discharge, Purple Heart eligibility, Fry Scholarship eligibility, or qualifying transferred entitlement. Eligible active-duty members and certain spouses using transferred benefits may participate under current rules.

VA determines benefit eligibility. The school determines whether the exact program participates, whether a limited place remains, and how its agreement is administered.

What the program pays

Yellow Ribbon can help with eligible net tuition and mandatory fees left above the applicable Post-9/11 GI Bill payment. The school contributes under its agreement and VA can match that eligible contribution. It does not automatically cover housing, meals, transportation, insurance, or every cost of attendance.

New York City’s housing allowance can look attractive, but it should not be treated as profit or tuition assistance. Housing rates and eligibility differ by location, enrollment format, rate of pursuit, benefit tier, and dates attended. Compare a realistic rent and transportation budget separately.

How to compare two New York programs

1. Confirm both exact programs in the VA GI Bill Comparison Tool.
2. Confirm the current Yellow Ribbon record for the same academic year.
3. Ask whether recipient space remains and what deadline applies.
4. Request a written net-price calculation showing Chapter 33, school contribution, VA match, state aid, institutional aid, and remaining balance.
5. Compare transfer-credit application, accreditation, completion, debt, and career outcomes.
6. Budget housing, meals, insurance, books, and transportation separately.
