Illinois Veterans Grant Covers Full Tuition at State Schools

The Illinois Veterans Grant (IVG) pays tuition and certain fees for eligible Illinois veterans at state-supported colleges and universities. It’s one of the most valuable state education benefits available and can be used alongside federal GI Bill benefits.

What the Illinois Veterans Grant Covers

  • Tuition: Full tuition at Illinois public institutions
  • Fees: Mandatory fees at most institutions
  • Credit Hours: Up to 120 credit hours (or 4 years equivalent)
  • Degree Levels: Undergraduate and graduate programs

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the IVG, you must meet ALL of the following:

  • Illinois Resident: Resident of Illinois at least 6 months before entering service, OR resident for at least one year before applying
  • Active Duty Service: At least one year of active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces (includes National Guard and Reserves if federally activated)
  • Discharge: Honorable discharge
  • Federal Benefits: Must apply for federal student aid (FAFSA)

Service Exceptions

The one-year service requirement may be waived if you:

  • Were discharged due to service-connected disability
  • Served in a combat zone
  • Were discharged under hardship conditions

How to Apply

  1. Complete FAFSA: Required before IVG application
  2. Gather Documents:
    • DD-214 (Member 4 copy)
    • Proof of Illinois residency
    • FAFSA Student Aid Report (SAR)
  3. Submit Application: Apply through the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC)
  4. School Certification: Your school will receive notification of eligibility

Using with GI Bill Benefits

The Illinois Veterans Grant can be combined with GI Bill benefits:

  • IVG: Covers tuition and fees
  • GI Bill: Provides housing allowance, book stipend, and any remaining costs
