Louisiana Yellow Ribbon Schools: LSU, Tulane and 2026–27 Guide

Louisiana students should not assume that “Yellow Ribbon school” means the same benefit at every campus or program. Participation, school contributions, degree levels, and student limits can change by academic year. Start with VA’s current participating-schools tool, search the exact institution and campus, and then confirm availability with that school’s certifying official.

For LSU specifically, first determine whether the public-school tuition charge leaves any gap for Yellow Ribbon to cover. LSU publishes military and veteran pathways that may provide resident tuition treatment to certain veterans, Guard or Reserve members, and veterans with qualifying service-connected disabilities. A student receiving the applicable in-state rate at a Louisiana public university may have a different calculation from a student attending a private university such as Tulane or Loyola.

Louisiana Yellow Ribbon schools to investigate

The examples below are starting points, not a permanent or complete list. VA’s directory controls current participation.

Louisiana State University–Baton Rouge

LSU maintains a Department of Veterans Affairs and a Military & Veterans Student Center. Its admissions guidance says certain military-connected students may qualify for resident tuition treatment under Louisiana rules, including specified veterans, Guard or Reserve members, and veterans with a qualifying service-connected disability. Eligibility depends on the published conditions and the student’s record.

That resident-rate decision matters before a Yellow Ribbon calculation. At a public institution, the Post-9/11 GI Bill at the 100% tier generally pays eligible net in-state tuition and mandatory fees. Yellow Ribbon is designed to help with qualifying tuition and fee amounts that remain above the applicable base payment; it is not an extra cash award when no eligible gap remains.

Use LSU’s Department of Veterans Affairs for enrollment certification and its military and veteran admissions guidance for current application and tuition-classification information. Then verify the exact LSU campus in VA’s Yellow Ribbon tool.

Tulane University

Tulane’s Yellow Ribbon terms can differ among academic divisions. For example, Tulane’s School of Public Health currently states that its graduate programs participate and that up to 10 students per year can receive Yellow Ribbon, first-come and first-served. Tulane’s School of Professional Advancement separately publishes Yellow Ribbon participation for eligible students in specified master’s programs.

Do not apply one Tulane school’s terms to another undergraduate, graduate, law, medical, business, public-health, or professional program. Search the exact academic division in VA’s directory and contact that division’s certifying official. Loyola University New Orleans and other private institutions

Private Louisiana colleges may participate under institution- or program-specific agreements, but an old school name on a blog list is not proof of a current contribution. Search Loyola University New Orleans and every other private institution directly in VA’s current directory. Confirm the exact degree, contribution amount, recipient limit, and award process in writing.

Private-school applicants should also ask how institutional grants, tuition scholarships, employer aid, and other tuition-specific assistance affect the net amount certified to VA. A large advertised contribution does not automatically stack on top of an unchanged financial-aid package.

Who can receive Yellow Ribbon?

VA generally requires Post-9/11 GI Bill eligibility at the 100% benefit level. Qualifying paths can include sufficient active-duty service, an eligible service-connected discharge, Purple Heart eligibility, the Fry Scholarship, or qualifying transferred entitlement. Eligible active-duty members and certain spouses using transferred benefits can also participate under current law.

VA determines the student’s benefit eligibility. The school determines whether the campus and program participate, whether a limited place remains, and how its agreement is administered. Review VA’s current Yellow Ribbon eligibility rules rather than relying on veteran or dependent status alone.

What Yellow Ribbon can—and cannot—pay

The program can help with eligible net tuition and mandatory fees left above the applicable Post-9/11 GI Bill payment. The participating school contributes under its agreement, and VA can match that eligible contribution.

Yellow Ribbon itself does not pay housing, meals, transportation, optional fees, insurance, or every cost of attendance. The GI Bill’s monthly housing allowance and books-and-supplies payment are separate benefit components with separate eligibility and payment rules.

Do not rank Louisiana schools by housing allowance alone. A higher local housing payment can coincide with higher rent and living costs, and online-only enrollment has different housing rules. Compare a realistic monthly budget separately from tuition.

How to compare LSU, Tulane, Loyola, and other Louisiana schools

1. Confirm the exact program. Verify campus, degree, delivery format, and VA approval.
2. Confirm your benefit tier. Use a current Certificate of Eligibility and remaining entitlement.
3. Resolve tuition classification. Public-school applicants should ask whether federal or Louisiana rules provide the resident rate.
4. Read the current Yellow Ribbon record. Record the academic year, school contribution, recipient limit, and degree level.
5. Ask whether space remains. Some programs allocate limited places first-come.
6. Request a written cost calculation. Separate tuition, mandatory fees, Chapter 33 payment, school contribution, VA match, other aid, and remaining balance.
7. Compare academic value. Review accreditation, transfer-credit application, graduation outcomes, licensing requirements, and veteran support.

• How many students can participate, and is a place currently available?
• Does the school require a separate request or deadline?

• Which housing, meal, insurance, or optional expenses remain my responsibility?
• What happens after a program change, withdrawal, leave, or transfer?
