How UT Austin processes GI Bill benefits
Students must be admitted to a VA State Approving Agency-approved degree program before UT can certify benefits. UT Austin’s current workflow requires students to:
- Confirm that the degree program is VA-approved.
- Review residency status and request a nonresident tuition waiver when applicable.
- Register for courses that apply to the degree.
- Submit UT’s GI Bill Questionnaire.
- Upload the Certificate of Eligibility, award history, and other required documents.
- For many graduate programs, provide a degree plan and semester-specific letter.
- Check My Tuition Bill and confirm attendance even if the displayed balance is zero.
UT warns that the VA can take several weeks to process certification. Students remain responsible for meeting the university’s tuition and registration deadlines and should not assume an expected VA payment automatically secures their courses.

UT Austin Hazlewood eligibility and coverage
The Hazlewood Act is a Texas exemption with several eligibility routes for qualifying veterans, spouses, children, and Legacy recipients. The Texas Veterans Commission describes a maximum of up to 150 semester credit hours of tuition and specified fee exemptions at Texas public institutions. Eligibility is not established merely by being a veteran or living in Texas.
UT Austin additionally requires an eligible program, state-funded coursework, satisfactory academic progress, compliance with the applicable Texas Education Code rules, and supporting documents. Student Accounts Receivable makes the final institutional determination.

Can you use Hazlewood and the GI Bill together?
Sometimes, but “together” does not mean two full tuition payments. UT Austin states that students stacking benefits must submit both the GI Bill Questionnaire and Hazlewood application. Tuition-paying GI Bill benefits—Chapter 33 and Chapter 31—must be used first. Proof of eligibility, ineligibility, or exhaustion may be required.
Other VA benefits that do not pay tuition directly, such as certain Chapter 30, Chapter 35, or Chapter 1606 benefits, may have different coordination rules. The school must evaluate the student’s actual benefit record.
Why “save the GI Bill for graduate school” is not universal advice
A student might want to preserve entitlement, but eligibility rules may require a tuition-paying benefit to be applied before Hazlewood. Some graduate programs are also excluded from Hazlewood because they are self-supporting or classified as Option III. Published UT Austin deadlines
For fall 2026, UT Austin publishes a July 13, 2026 priority deadline for both its GI Bill Questionnaire and Hazlewood application. The fall 2026 Hazlewood final deadline is December 7, 2026. Applications after the priority date are not guaranteed to be reviewed before the first tuition bill is due.
Deadlines change by term. Students should apply early and use the current UT pages rather than treating these dates as permanent.
What the benefits may not cover
- Housing, food, transportation, and personal expenses;
- late registration and other noncertifiable charges;
- courses that do not apply to the approved degree;
- University Extension, affiliated studies, and some self-supporting or executive programs;
- costs created by a benefit percentage below 100% or exhausted entitlement; and
- nonresident tuition until an applicable waiver is approved and posted.
